A healthy diet is essential for optimum health. A well-balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, improve your overall health, and lower your risk of diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis. A healthy diet consists of four major food groups, with a few smaller groups thrown in for good measure. However, a healthy diet will get the majority of its nourishment from these four main food groups. Vegetables and fruits, grains, milk products and meats, and alternatives are among them.

Each of the food groups listed will be well-balanced in a healthy diet. Naturally, various people will require varying amounts of food. Age, body size, activity level, and gender all have an impact on how much food you consume. The guide below will give you a broad sense of how much of each group you should serve for a balanced diet.

Please keep in mind that meat is not a required component of a balanced diet. Contrary to popular belief, veggies, beans, and soy products provide adequate protein.

A healthy diet is rich in fruits and vegetables and is based on bread, potatoes, and other grains. Moderate amounts of milk and dairy products, meat, fish, or meat/milk alternatives, and restricted amounts of fat and sugar-containing meals are all part of a balanced diet.

You must have carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, salts and fibre in the correct proportions. If there is not enough protein, you will not be able to grow properly and you will not be able to repair yourself i.e. wounds will not heal properly. If you do not have enough energy containing foods you will feel very tired, you will not have enough energy. If you have too much energy containing foods you will become overweight.

If you believe you are overweight, you should increase your physical activity to “burn off” some of the calories you consumed at your last meal.
