The United States Manhattan book editor Maddie Kelly is shocked to learn at a book reading that her boss, the self-centered Irish writer Paul Kennedy, whom she adores, is getting married to Emma, her best friend, in Ireland. Maddie decides to stand as a bridesmaid at the wedding despite her mixed emotions. Travelling to Ireland with her other close friend, Heather, Maddie meets James Thomas, a lovely Englishman.
