NBA Considering Introduction Of Cup, Reduction Of Regular Season Schedule For 21-22 Season

The NBA is considering using their 75th anniversary season in 21-22 as an opportunity to test of their bolder initiatives such as a mid-season cup and postseason play-in tournament while also reducing the 82-game regular season.

During a conference call on June 17th, a committee comprised of a dozen top team executives from both basketball and business operations discussed alternatives to the traditional schedule with the league office. The call was described as an exploratory brainstorming session.

The NBA would have the chance to observe the trial run and evaluate the long-term viability of such a schedule design.

There is a belief that a mid-season cup and play-in tournament could recoup the loss of revenue from shortening the season.

The number of games discussed was from 58 to a more marginal reduction. Sources say there was limited appetite among team officials for a major reduction in games.
