What's the Best Amateur Sport in Your City?

Each Monday we ask you for your best city tips: driving tips, restaurant recs, things to do, and any other advice for visitors and locals. Sometimes the weekly topic is a specific city; other times it's an aspect of all cities, so everyone can participate.

Not only can you play shuffleboard in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus, but you can even join a league, as I learned from a friend who plays in one, despite being a good 35 years from retirement. There are more obvious amateur sports in town: soccer in a skinny park in the East Village, basketball in Greenwich village, field hockey in Tompkins Square. What’s the best amateur sport in your city?

I don’t really play sports, or work out, or stand up, but I like to imagine that if only I heard about a very good league, or a beginner-friendly match-up night, or somewhere that I could simultaneously learn a sport and play it, then I’d jump right in.

So I want to hear about the best places for casual players, beginners, and low commitments. I want to hear about the low-impact sports where a non-athletic person can compete. You know, bowling leagues.

But I also want to know where the pros go—well, not the literal pros, or even the literal amateurs who are headed for the Olympics, or regionals or whatever. But what are the local amateur sports where you really need to know your shit?
