 The town was officially incorporated in 1844 and is the home of Naval Air Station Whiting Field. The population was 7,045 according to the census of 2000. In 2004, the population reported in the U.S. Census Bureau was 8,044. The estimated population for 2013 was 9,323.



 Milton was known by many names in the course of its development. Some of the most famous was "Hell-Town" (muggy and inhospitable land covered with briars, snakes, mosquitoes, thorns and thorns) "Jernigan's Landing", "Scratch Ankle" (due to the briars growing on the banks of the rivers), and "Hardscrabble."



 According to Florida scholar Allen Morris, "Just which Milton was honored by the final name is the subject of debate. Some say it is a contraction that comes from an earlier Milltown; others that they were Milton Amos, pioneer, and ancestor of the current Amos family. Others believe that it was John Milton--not the English poet, but the Civil War governor of Florida.



 Milton was settled in the early 1800s as a small town centered around the lumber industry. The settlement originally was called Scratch Ankle because of the bramble and briars that were growing in the area. Another name was Jernigan's Landing following Benjamin Jernigan (died April 1847) who had erected the first water-powered sawmill in the location that is now Locklin Lake between 1828 and 1830. Other names were Lumberton, Black Water, and Hard Scrabble, but by 1839, the town was known as Milltown. Milton was declared town in 1844. It was just one year prior to the time when the Territory of Florida joined the United States as the 27th state.



 In the Civil War, much of Milton was burned by Confederate forces that were retreating from Union victory over Pensacola in the month of May 1862. The Confederates planned to stop the town's industrial assets from being taken over by Union hands. After the Southern forces had evacuated, the Union troops were able to establish a small garrison the nearby town of Bagdad in which they could establish a base for expeditions throughout the region. Many Milton residents moved to Alabama.



 Naval Air Station Whiting Field was constructed in World War II with the help of many German prisoners of war who were kept in a camp on the site. The station was commissioned on July 16 1943, with the help of Rear-Admiral George D. Murray and the widow of Captain Kenneth Whiting, after whom the station was named.



 On the 31st of March in 1962 On March 31, 1962, an F3 tornado struck the northwest of Milton with 17 fatalities and 100 injuries. It was the most deadly tornado to hit Florida from February 22 to when 25 people were killed in Kissimmee. It was also the deadliest tornado in 1962.
