THE REUNION

On a cool Saturday evening, the reunion of the 2009 set of Queens College, Yaba, took place.

“Funmi is running late, this is so typical of her.” Sarah rolled her eyes.

Right on cue, Funmilayo walked in. Sarah tried to ignore the twinge of envy that nearly coloured her green. Although they were close and kept in touch, they were opposites. Sarah’s humble background and reserved personality were unlike Funmi’s wealth and popularity.

“Sorry, I’m late, I had car issues so I took an Uber.”

“What about your fleet of cars?”

Funmi waved dismissively.

“Sunshades at night?” Sarah raised an eyebrow at the large Gucci shades that concealed her face. 

“I look glamorous, that’s all that matters.” Funmi drank a glass of champagne in one go and grabbed a refill.

“I see.”

“Well, I see that you’re unmarried.”

“I’m married to my profession and we’re in a loving, committed relationship,” Sarah said in clipped tones.

“That’s right, you’re a doctor now.”

The words seemed…wistful.

“Don’t you think you should slow down on the drinks?” Sarah said an hour later.

“We don’t get to have many reunions.” Her words slurred together. “I’ll just call another…Uber.”

“I’d feel better taking you home myself.”

They arrived sometime later at Funmi’s house.

“The lights are on,” Sarah said as she parked the car.

“Femi must have left them on.”

Sarah walked Funmi to the door.

“Oh, I left my purse in your car.”

“Wait here, I’ll get it.”

While Sarah went to the car, Femi opened the door and saw his wife.

“I told you not to leave this house.”

A resounding slap, then silence. Sarah ran to the scene where Funmi held her cheek. Her shades lay on the floor and the series of bruises on her face were untold stories of pain.
