Speer Gold Dot G2 Now Available for Commercial MarketThe Firearm Blog

The Speer Gold Dot G2 line of hollow-point ammunition has been a staple for law enforcement and now it is finally available for the commercial market! Shooters have their choice of 3 predictable suspects in either 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP. For 3 years now law enforcement have been able to top off their magazines with Gold Dot G2, and TFB reported on this back in November of 2016. Then, last year at the US Concealed Carry Association Expo (USCCAE) Speer hinted at making the ammunition available for commercial sale. Well, those hints have finally come to fruition.

This ammunition that so many police departments have relied so heavily on is very similar to their original Gold Dot ammo (which is not surprising), and like many things the important differences are in the finer details. The secret sauce to the Gold Dot G2 can be read below as presented by Speer:

The grain weights that you are looking at are on the heavier side of every caliber’s spectrum, but they are nothing out of the ordinary. The pricing also leans to the more expensive side, but it is right in the ballpark with other premium hollow-points like Federal Premium’s Hydrashok. The MSRP pricing and further specs can be read below as presented by Speer:

It would be interesting to see how this ammunition performs in a ballistic gel test in comparison to something like Federal Premium Hydrashok or Hornady Critical Duty. Hopefully that is something our in-house gel expert Andrew covers in the near future. Some final convincing words provided by Speer can be read below to hopefully persuade you to start filling your carry magazines with Gold Dot G2:

The next generation of protection has arrived. Previously only offered to law enforcement, Speer® Gold Dot® G2® offers the ultimate performance for self-defense thanks to an exclusive nose design. Instead of a large hollow-point cavity, Gold Dot G2 has a shallow dish filled with a high-performance elastomer. On impact, the material is forced into engineered internal fissures to start the expansion process. The result is extremely uniform expansion, better separation of the petals, and more consistent penetration across barrier types through full-size handguns.

For our readers out there who may be law enforcement, have you tried the Gold Dot G2 already? What have your experiences been like? Is anybody else pretty tempted to run out and pick some of this stuff up? Let us know what you think in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
