Meghan Markle’s Early Activism Revealed in New Documentary

Meghan Markle may not need the presidency to make change around the world—but as the new True Royalty TV documentary Meghan for President? posits, she might be a formidable candidate if she ever decided to try it. The documentary features interviews with old friends who talk about Meghan’s past including people like Meghan’s sorority sister Liz Kores and her elementary school teacher Ilise Faye, who are interviewed about Meghan for the first time.

According to Lores Meghan would be “phenomenal” should she ever choose to run for presidency. “I first met Meghan freshman year. We were the newest members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter at Northwestern,” Kores said. “At our sorority chapter meeting, I stood up and said, ‘Hey guys I’m thinking of volunteering with this organisation called Glass Slipper Project, it’s an organization that was giving prom dresses to girls who couldn’t afford them - who wants to come with me?’ And Meg’s hand was up right away.”

Meghan is clearly aware of the difference clothing can make in a person’s life—just look at her capsule collection for the Smart Works charity to provide working wardrobes to women in need. She was aware of it in college, too. “There was one girl who came through towards the end and we could not find a dress for her,” Kores remembered. “But Meg wouldn’t give up and so we started looking in all the size racks, maybe a dress had been racked wrong and we found a dress and the girl put it on. And she cried. And then we cried… That was really my first strong memory of Meg and it seems like she has been helping people ever since.”

The documentary also includes new and previously unseen footage of Meghan as a ten-year-old campaigning against the first Gulf War, proving that she was an activist from an early age. The program also features interviews with old friends and a former teacher who hail Meghan as a force for change and one of the most dynamic members of the Royal Family since Princess Diana.

According to her former teacher Ilise Faye, who taught Meghan at the Hollywood Schoolhouse, Meghan stood up for what she believed in. She was inspired to protest the Gulf War when one of her friends’ brothers went overseas to serve.

“She was one of those children that would stand up for underdog, she would stand up for what she believed in, and she was a leader amongst her friends, her peer group,” Faye said.

While Palace sources have quashed any speculation that Meghan, who has retained her US citizenship, would ever run for presidency (it would require Harry giving up his royal status), at least one person thinks she could do it: “You’ve had Ronald Reagan who was an actor, Arnie [Arnold Schwarzenegger] who was a governor, a reality show person now, President Trump. Meghan could do it,” said comedian Loni Love.

Whether or not she’d run for office, Meghan does want to change the world, and she believes she can do it with Prince Harry according to sources who know the couple.

“We’re not saying she’s going to be the president, but the question is where might Meghan end up? She’s an incredibly clever, driven focused lady who throughout her life has wanted to bring about change,” True Royalty founder and exec producer Nick Bullen told ET Canada. “You discover how early this started.”
