The most intriguing feature of tiger reserves in India is the biodiversity and the niche habitats that exist in small pockets. The niche habitats though small are the one's that preserve rare and endangered species of mammals, insects, birds and reptiles. These are the ones which get destroyed easily hence protected areas preserve them well but outside of PAs the niche hardly survive.

Hence when you are on tiger safari keep a look out for these pockets most of which have a name. For those with deep biological instinct and interest in botany and geology these can be interesting research havens.

But enjoying a nature preserve requires a keen knowledge of how ecosystems and the food chain within works then you can see the nature at its best. It sometimes becomes difficult to appreciate the tiger chase in the reserves. But yet it is understandable since the rare and endangered cat is a fascinating creature, and you would like to see it at least once in a lifetime.

The same applies to the smaller cousin the panther which is an elusive and nocturnal predator. Hence the focus of attention is easy to grasp and you cannot blame people. This fascination has been on the big cats from the very beginning of tourism. In the process lot of exciting sightings are ignored. In the haste to see a mega fauna tourists ignore the beautiful landscapes and terrains that these forests offer on safaris. They also manage to miss the wonderful birds and small animals that make these habitats their home.

Animals like wolves, hyenas, wild dogs, swamp deer and bison can be enchanting sight and can be easily encountered on game rides. A sloth bear can be a rare sight n the wood and offers a lifetime chance to photograph. These animals manage to camouflage or hide themselves in the vegetation or bamboo thickets. One has to keep track of their pu marks in order to locate them in the vast jungles. In case of tracking the tigers and leopards which are always accompanied by alarm calls whence they move small wild animals and herbivores are not accompanied by these vocal eruptions.

Animals like jackals, small and large Indian civets, toddy cats, porcupines, ratel are highly nocturnal and seen on night safaris. But in the tiger reserves and National Parks night safaris are not allowed at few places. But at night if you are driving near the parks you can come across these animals under the headlights of the car. So be alert.
