Eoin Morgan: World Cup triumph would be 'iconic' for England - 2 minutes read

World Cup triumph would be 'iconic' for England

Eoin Morgan declared it will be an “iconic” moment for English cricket if his team wins the World Cup at Lord’s on Sunday.

Morgan stands on the cusp of achieving his dream, four years in the making, of leading England to World Cup glory.

It is fitting that his team face New Zealand in Sunday’s final given the inspiration Morgan took from their former captain, Brendon McCullum, when he began the reinvention of England’s one-day cricket in the aftermath of the disastrous World Cup campaign of 2015.

McCullum was at Lord’s on Saturday to wish his former New Zealand teammates well but also had a word with Morgan, who took charge of a relaxed net session as England try to keep a grip on their emotions going into the biggest game of their lives.

Sunday’s final will be the first cricket match for 14 years to be shown live on free to air television after Sky Sports agreed earlier this week to share their broadcast with Channel 4.

It is a unique opportunity for Morgan’s team to grab the nation’s attention and put cricket back in the mainstream.

“It [the final] means a huge amount to me and everybody in the changing room. It’s a culmination of four years of hard work, dedication, a lot of planning and it presents a huge opportunity to go on and try and win a World Cup,” said Morgan. “I think for everybody around the country, the support we’ve had throughout has been unquestionable and it makes you feel extremely lucky to be part of a team that has that sort of support.
