The Minecraft Movie’s First Trailer Proves That Some Things Were Not Meant to Be Rendered Realist... - 2 minutes read

Warner Bros. has released a trailer for its live-action Minecraft movie starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen . Take a look:

According to a press release, Minecraft: The Movie concerns “four misfits- Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—[who] find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.  To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black).  Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”

From the look of things, Hollywood’s spin on the wildly popular sandbox game will be very reminiscent of 2017’s Jumanji, only this time with Jack Black playing the semi-feral guide who’s been stuck in the matrix too long. Instead of the fantasy-jungle setting, however, our heroes find themselves surrounded by realistically-rendered building block-shaped horrors of Minecraft‘s overworld. As the game’s charming lo-fi graphics were a large part of its appeal, this trailer feels haloed by that same bizarre aura attached to the original Sonic the Hedgehog trailer or The Garbage Pail Kids Movie–Jason Momoa’s “Garbage Man” character even looks like he was outfitted by the latter film’s aspiring fashion designer, Tangerine. Will this disparity even appeal to the Minecraft faithful? Considering it’s one of the biggest video games of all time, the potential is there for this movie to be huge… if audiences aren’t put off by the creepy realisitic recreations of the game’s animals and creatures.

Directed by Oscar-nominee Jared Hess, the adaptation additionally boasts BAFTA-nominated director of photography Enrique Chediak behind the camera, Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major, editor James Thomas, Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and costume designer Amanda Neale. Remember these names when Minecraft releases exclusively in theaters April 4, 2025.
