How Lauren Chan, Model, Spends Her Sundays - 4 minutes read

It’s a busy time of year for the model Lauren Chan, with the flurry of activity surrounding New York Fashion Week Friday through Wednesday. Her runway gigs will include 11 Honoré, Christian Siriano and Peter Do, which she will fit in around running her company, Henning, a size-inclusive women’s clothing line, for which she also designs.
“The reason I started Henning was to improve the lives of women size 12 and up who are feeling excluded from this industry,” said Ms. Chan, 31. “I want them to feel better.”
She lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, with her husband, Alan Paron, 37, a national sales manager at Kohler, and their shepherd mix, Pepper.

ACORNS AND ALMOND MILK Every day, not just Sunday, I wake up and go to Herbert Von King Park with my husband and dog. We walk through all the open spaces. My husband likes to joke that Pepper counts the acorns. She’s taking inventory. On the way home, we’ll stop at Little Roy for coffee. I always get an almond milk latte with an extra shot. We’re not big breakfast people.

CUSTOMER CARE I’d like to say I don’t check my inbox next. The weekend should bring calm. But it’s a nice time to get things done for Henning. There’s tons of operational stuff. And I like to take a peek at the customer inbox and answer questions or reply to reviews. I also try to connect with one of my agents to get a feel for what the week ahead looks like for my modeling work. I could be shooting locally or flying somewhere or shooting content on my own. That’s been a huge part of the job since Covid.

JUST LIKE HEAVEN If I have a big job coming up, I will go to my friend Joseph Carrillo’s studio on the Upper East Side. He does facial sculpting. It’s a sort of facial massage for depuffing. I drive up the F.D.R., and if it’s sunny, it’s a beautiful ride. I’ll put on my favorite playlist. It has ’80s rock, like Talking Heads and the Cure. It’s mood boosting. If it sounds like it belongs in the third-act montage of an ’80s rom-com, then I’m into it.

SAMPLES, SALADS I don’t always go straight home. Sometimes I get coffee with a friend. Sometimes I’ll run errands. I might stop by the garment district or one of Henning’s factories, like Tailored Industry in Industry City, to pick up samples for Henning, or the JAG Models offices to pick up press comp cards or garments that I need for a shoot. My stomach starts growling probably around 1. If I’m back home, Alan and I like Eugene Co., which is in our neighborhood, for maybe a Cobb salad. After, we walk Pepper again.

FAMILY DINNER Most Sundays we go to my dear friend Jaclyn Sarka’s for dinner. She’s also my agent at JAG. Her house is half a block down from us. Her husband, Matt Gelsomino, cooks for us every weekend. He’s not a professional, but he’s a wonderful, enthusiastic cook. Usually he’s smoking brisket or working on a seafood boil. I guess you could call it family dinner. When we get there, Alan and Matt usually run off to the smoker and Jaclyn and I will catch up on my modeling work.

RESET We’re generally home by 7, because I like to have a chunk of about three hours to reset for the week so there’s no anxiety running into the next day, no Monday scaries. I’ll talk to my family — my mom, my dad and my brother — on FaceTime. They’re near Toronto. Then I’ll plop myself in front of the TV. I’ll watch the previous night’s “Saturday Night Live” on Hulu. I love Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon. And I definitely have some Sunday night beauty rituals, like putting on an LED face or sheet mask, or gua sha, a sort of facial massage with gentle scraping. I get into bed at 10. If I’m lucky, I’ll put my phone down by 10:30.
