Sunsama (YC W19) Is Hiring a Product Expert - 5 minutes read

Sunsama is looking for a Product Expert to help answer customer questions and teach customers about product best practices.

Sunsama is a daily planner for busy professionals. We’re a small team of six, that’s already profitable.

Our users find out about our product because they’re overworked, overwhelmed, and work has made them sick. In their first few days of using the product, they’re trying to figure out how Sunsama can help them take back control of their workday so they can move through their day with a sense of calm.

You will become an expert in our product and our productivity metholodogies. As an expert, you’ll help educate customers on how to use Sunsama.

You'll be well suited for this role if you are self-sufficient, have good written communication skills and can quickly become an expert in new tools.

Sunsama is a profitable team of six, doing over 1M in ARR. Our customers rave about our product and ask a lot of questions about how to integrate it into their lives. The vast majority of your interactions with customers will be positive. They’re happy to be using the product and just need guidance.

We're building Sunsama because work doesn't need to be stressful and crazy. We want to help people be thoughtful and intentional with their daily goals, stay focused on them throughout the day and then go home and do things other than work. This role is fully remote and async, giving you the flexibility to make work adapt to your life, not the other way around.

We work remotely and asynchronously so we can maximize heads down focused time to do fulling high quality work. As a team, we only have a single one-hour meeting a week, where we don’t talk about work and just hang out. All of our collaboration happens inside of Sunsama, Intercom, Notion, and GitHub. We are ambitious and hard-working but our dream work environment looks more like a monastery than a typical high-octane startup.

We apply the same principles to customer support as we do to engineering and product work. We don’t attempt to be “always on” for customers, instead, we set aside a few hours each day to work our way through customer questions with focus and intention. Instead of just firing off quick responses, we take the time to deeply understand the customer, their issue or question, do our own research and then answer back with a thorough and thoughtful response.

We enjoy working with people who have a strong work ethic, actively seek balance between work and life and want to share a better way to work with others. Your role in educating users is the highest leverage activity for growing our revenue and customer base. When you help users understand how to use the product effectively, they become paying cusotmers and stick around for years to come.

We raised a $2.4M seed round from YCombinator, Menlo Ventures and Foundation Capital.

Then, we'd love to know more about why you are reaching out. Feel free to take this in any direction but here's what we're often curious about when we meet someone new for a role: What are you looking for in your next role? What got you motivated to reach out to us? What do you like to work on that keeps you motivated for long stretches of time (weeks, months, years)? What do you think you’d be good at in this role? What areas do you think you need to grow in? What does your ideal work day look like? In an ideal world, how would your work fit into the rest of your life? What questions do you have about Sunsama? Ashutosh (CEO @ Sunsama) will respond back and we'll kick off a back and forth of a couple emails. The purpose of this conversation is to ensure: There's alignment on skills, experience, compensation, and timeline (to start). Dive into the questions above. Ensure that we're able to smoothly perform critical business while talking async. We’ll share a document that will simulate many of things you’d do in a given workday e.g. answering questions and writing a few short documents. Briefly discuss your project submission and your thought process You ask any questions you want Recommendations (As fast as you can get them to us) If the call goes well, we'll ask you to share 3-5 recommendations and reviews from people you've worked with in the past. If we're excited about everything up to this point, we'll make an offer. If we don't make an offer we'll provide detailed feedback about our decision making process over email.

Once you join, we’ll go into more detail about what success looks like in this role and also share a detailed onboarding plan that will help you become a product expert. At a high level, this is what we’ll be looking for at the 3 and 12 month markers.
