Stop & Shop trying to fill more than 500 part-time jobs in NJ

Stop & Shop wants to hire 520 part-time workers at its New Jersey stores in a bid to improve its customer service, company officials said Wednesday.

The company billed the jobs as a chance for workers to get experience and perhaps rise through the ranks.

"These aren't just part-time jobs," said Bob Yager, senior vice president of sales and operations, who started with Stop & Shop 30 years ago as a part-time cashier. "They are the building blocks to a rewarding career with a company that values people and hard work."

Stop & Shop is based in Purchase, New York.

The company has its work cut out to fill the job openings. New Jersey's unemployment rate of 3.8 percent is at its lowest level since 2001. And there is no shortage of businesses, from Starbucks to Whole Foods, seeking help.

Stop & Shop has taken other steps to fill the tasks of its daily operations. The company and its sister stores, Giant and Martin's, recently deployed 500 robots to search for spills and slip hazards.

It now wants to hire seven to eight employees per store in a variety of jobs. Cashiers, baggers and porters need to be at least 16 years old. Other openings — bakery, deli, grocery, and seafood, for example — require applicants to be at least 18.

The part-time positions provide 12 to 28 hours of work a week. To apply, go to https://stopandshop.reidsystems.com.
