The PlayStation Network was busy last year, as 2023 saw dozens of high-profile releases on that platform. But which games were the most-downloaded on PS5 and PS4? Sony has revealed the top PlayStation Store downloads across all of 2023, and while the number one game on that list won't be too surprising, there are some unexpected entries on the list.

In the US and Canada, Hogwarts Legacy was the most-downloaded game of the year on PS5, and came in second place on PS4 to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. The impact of the Harry Potter game was massive, as thanks to the strength of the brand and it having a long headstart with its February 2023 release, it broke a longstanding record of the No. 1 best-selling title of the year in the US being either a Call of Duty game or or the newest release from Rockstar Games .

In Europe, the continent's love of soccer propelled EA Sports FC 24 to the top of the PS5 and PS4 charts on that side of the globe. For more predictable entries, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, NBA 2K24, and Madden NFL 24 can all be found in the list, while other big releases like Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Final Fantasy 16 battled each other to remain in the top 20.

For some unexpected results, Grand Theft Auto 5 was the 20th-most-downloaded game on PS5 in the US, while the Caped Crusader made an appearance on the US and Canadian PS4 lists, possibly as a result of the game receiving a shiny new Pattsuit. On PlayStation VR 2, multiplayer-shooter Pavlov was the most-downloaded game across the world, and in a shocking turn of events, Fortnite scored the most downloads in the free-to-play section.
