Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali has been added to the England squad for the second Test against India.

That was his first Test since the Ashes opener at Edgbaston in 2019.

Fellow all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes are currently unavailable for England, who were outplayed for large periods as they drew last week's series opener at Trent Bridge.

Moeen has represented England in limited-overs cricket this summer while being captain of Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, helping them to the top of the men's table.

"He's been called into the squad because of his capabilities with both bat and ball," said England captain Joe Root.

"He's in serious form at the minute, albeit in the short format, but we all know what he is capable of in the Test arena.

"He's a great contender to play in the next Test. We haven't been to the ground yet so we will need to look at conditions and weigh things up but he's in a great position to potentially play."

Meanwhile, Stuart Broad will have a scan on Wednesday after tweaking his right calf at the warm-up at Lord's.

The injury meant he was unable to train with England on Tuesday and the scan will determine how serious it is.
