Both teams managed to advance to the semi-final round yesterday but lost at this stage today by an identical 3-0 result.

The men’s and women’s table tennis teams from Puerto Rico won bronze medals at the Pan American Championship in this discipline, which takes place in Santiago, Chile.

Melanie Díaz, Daniely Ríos and the newcomer Brianna Burgos -components of the national women’s team- fell in the semifinal against the United States. The athletes would come from beating the Cuban team with a score of 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

For their part, Daniel González, Oscar Birriel and Ángel Naranjo were defeated by Brazil. The group defeated Chile 3-2 in the quarterfinals, in an action in which Brian Afanador played in place of Birriel.

The Puerto Ricans returned to the game on Thursday, in the men’s singles tournament. That day, Birriel will face Cuban Eday Gómez Rojas at 10:30 a.m. in the round of the best 64. Naranjo will do the same against the representative of Canada, Zexuan Wang, at 2:45 p.m.
