Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell Facebook VR Games Rumored

A new report suggests that Facebook may be working on VR versions of Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed that they intend to release for Oculus VR devices.

The initial report seems to have come from The Information (the report is locked behind a paywall) which was tweeted out by Geoff Keighley. Since then, additional details have started to emerge. The basic story, though is that Facebook seems interested in expanding their VR war chest by acquiring additional studios as well as the rights to feature VR versions of some popular video game franchises.

That part of the story certainly seems to make sense as Facebook has been hiring additional executives for their VR department as well as pushing new versions of the Rift that they hope will address some of the most common consumer problems with the technology. it certainly seems that they are trying to expand the VR industry, in general, starting with their own interests in the technology.

As for the reports that they've already acquired the rights to VR versions of the Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cellfranchises, there is also some precedent for that. Ubisoft previously published an Oculus Rift exclusive called Eagle Flight as well as some other high-profile VR titles. There does certainly seem to be a relationship there as well as interest on Ubisoft's part in VR technology as a concept.

While the Assassin's Creed VR title is noteworthy largely due to the popularity of the franchise, it's Splinter Cell that's drawing much of the attention in the wake of this news. That's probably because there have been reports and teases of a new Splinter Cellgame for some time now, but nothing has come from them. The idea that a new Splinter Cellcould take the form of a VR game is not exactly thrilling the series' fatigued fanbase.

We'll bring you more on these rumored VR projects as additional information becomes available.
