Mac From ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Finally Gets To Have His Catch With Chase Utley

Mac from FX’s long-running comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has finally achieved his lifelong dream of playing catch with baseball star Chase Utley. The hilarious moment occurred at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia on Friday (June 21) during the former Phillies second baseman’s jersey retirement.

In a Season 5 (2009) episode of the popular show titled: ‘The World Series Defense’, Mac (played by Rob McElhenney) penned a heartfelt letter to Utley (that the gang made fun of him for), hoping to one day meet his idol and have a baseball catch with him. Since the gang was headed to the World Series, Mac planned to have Dee (Katlin Olson) give the letter to Chase during a stunt she was planning where she would run onto the field.

Dear Chase, I feel like I can call you Chase because you and me are so alike. I’d like to meet you one day, it would be great to have a catch. I know I can’t throw as fast as you but I think you’d be impressed with my speed. I love your hair, you run fast. Did you have a good relationship with your father? Me neither. These are all things we can talk about and more. I know you have no been getting my letters because I know you would write back if you did. I hope you write back this time, and we can become good friends. I am sure our relationship would be a real home run!

You can watch Olson’s character Dee reading the letter below:

That meeting, however, never occurred. In the following 6th season of the series, during an episode titled “The Gang Gets Stranded In The Woods,” the gang heads to a charity even where Frank (Danny DeVito) arranged for Mac to have a catch with Chase, however, due to an unforeseen car accident, that meetup never occurs. Instead, Denise (Glenn Howerton) and Charlie (Charlie Day) make it to the charity even and hang out with Chase, sending Mac a picture of them together to taunt him.

Now a decade later, Mac’s dream has finally come true. You can watch the moment Mac fulfilled his lifelong dream below:

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia aired its 13th overall season in November last year and Howerton, who has been attached as director for an episode of the upcoming 14th season, recently confirmed that filming was about to begin.

McElhenney has been providing fans with regular updates of the filming process via Instagram and recently said that the upcoming new season of the show is “getting weird” as he shared a behind-the-scenes photo online.
