Donald Trump grinned from ear-to-ear as he warned Russian president Vladimir Putin not to interfere in US elections.

It comes as the Russian President invited Trump to attend the May 9 Victory Day commemorative events in Moscow next year,

But Democrats have criticised Mr Trump's comments after he was asked about the issue by a journalist.

Asked if he was going to warn Russia not to meddle in the next American election, Mr Trump turned to Me Putin and jokingly said: “Don’t meddle in the election.”

Senator Chuck Schumer, who leads the Democratic Party in the Senate, criticised Mr Trump's handling of the question.

He tweeted: "President is joking with Putin about interfering in our elections, but the joke is on us and Putin’s the only one laughing.

"President Trump is basically giving Putin a green light to interfere in 2020."
