"Final Fantasy XIV" Adapted Into A TV Series

Sony Pictures Television has announced that they plan to develop a live-action TV series adaptation of “Final Fantasy XIV Online” which will be produced in conjunction with Square Enix and Hivemind (“The Expanse,” “The Witcher”).

The series is inspired by the characters and world of Eorzea, but will revolve around an original story rather than incorporate one from the 2010 MMORPG PC title. Familiar characters from the game will appear alongside new ones.

The series will focus on the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict and Final Fantasy game elements like chocobos, airships, beastmen, and Cid will be incorporated.

Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (“Winter’s Knight”) will pen the series with a streaming service to be the show’s likely home.

“Final Fantasy XIV” has garnered over 16 million registered users with the third major expansion pack ‘Shadowbringers’ launching next week. This will mark the first live-action screen adaptation of the game series since 2001’s failed feature “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within”.
