South Dakota is holding primary elections for local, gubernatorial, and congressional offices on Tuesday. Polls close at 7 p.m. CT.
 
The races and the stakes
In the US Senate, GOP Sen. John Thune is running for reelection to a 4th term this November. He'll be running in the GOP primary on Tuesday against Mark Mowry and Bruce Whalen. The winner of the Republican primary will face off against Democrat Brian Bengs in November.


South Dakota has one at-large congressional district which is currently held by Rep. Dusty Johnson. Johnson is running for reelection and will face off against state Rep. Taffy Howard in the GOP primary. According to the experts at Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, the race is rated as "Safe R" come November. 
Also Tuesday, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is looking to secure another term in office this November. She faces off against state Rep. Steven Haugaard in the Republican primary. The winner of the GOP primary will go up against Democratic state Rep. Jamie Smith in November.
All 35 of South Dakota's state senate seats are up for election this Tuesday and in November, in addition to all 70 seats in the state assembly.
