Petri Honored with ICT’s Raymond Mauk Leadership Award

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) has honored Verle Petri, a long-time insurance executive and expert on Texas insurance regulation and policy, as this year’s 2019 Raymond Mauk Leadership Award recipient.

ICT presented the Mauk Leadership Award to Petri during its 27th Annual ICT/AFACT Property and Casualty Insurance Symposium in Austin. Petri is the twenty-second recipient of the award, which recognizes those who have made notable contributions to the Texas property/casualty insurance industry.

The award honors Petri’s 65 years of service and the many inroads made during his tenure. He was selected from a field of several nominees.

Petri grew up on a farm in Guthrie County, Iowa, and joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 17. His tour of duty found him in the Pacific during the final years of World War II, and he served this nation as part of the “Greatest Generation.” Petri was assigned to an Auxiliary Attack Troop Carrier and his ship was part of the group of support vessels surrounding the USS Battleship Missouri when the Japanese signed the final surrender on Sept. 2, 1945. After the war, Petri returned home and attended the University of Iowa where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Commerce Degree.

In 1955, he moved to Houston and began his career in insurance as an underwriter with Pacific Employers Insurance Company. Later, he became marketing manager for the Pacific Indemnity Insurance Company, which was purchased by Chubb in 1967. As marketing manager for Chubb, he played a key role in advocating and working with the former State Board of Insurance and now the Texas Department of Insurance, as well as working on issues related to the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA).

Petri also was tasked with developing the government affairs role for Chubb in Texas, where he became known as the “problem solver.” In 2017, Petri retired from Chubb after serving in various management roles and assisting Chubb on critical regulatory issues in Texas

In a statement, ICT Executive Director Albert Betts, commented: “On behalf of ICT and its board of directors, we are honored to recognize Verle with this leadership award. I had the pleasure of working with him on many different insurance issues over the years. He has always been a man of honor and grace, and a stalwart in the property and casualty industry. More importantly, throughout his career, he set an example of how a professional should carry themselves.”
