Dad knocked out with own baseball bat after going to settle row over dogs

A dad-of-three spent three weeks in hospital after being knocked out with his own baseball bat when he went to settle a row over dogs.

News that his partner had got into an argument with a couple and had been put in a head lock sent Nathan West into a rage.

He armed himself with the weapon and a large hunting knife and went to the North Staffordshire park where the row had broken out.

But when he confronted the pair the man snatched his bat and put him in intensive care, StokeonTrent Live reports.

West, 32, went on to plead guilty to affray, possessing a bladed article, and possessing an offensive weapon at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

Prosecutor Tim Ashmore said: "On June 23 last year in a park in Newcastle there was an argument between two women and a man. The woman was  known to the defendant.

"He attended and he had a bat and a Bowie knife. He began waving it around and making threats but the man managed to retrieve the bat.

"West pulled out the knife and caused a slight injury to the man - who then hit the defendant with the bat knocking him out.

"This put him in intensive care for three weeks."

Barry White, representing West, told the court his client still has regular headaches after the attack.

He said: "He was at home when his son told him his partner was in a head lock. It was about dogs being off leads and he reacted understandably but in the wrong way.

"He has already paid the price for this and accepts he should not have taken the knife out."

Mr White told the court West had no explanation as to why he owned a hunting knife.

He was also ordered to complete 160 hours unpaid work and complete 15 days worth of rehabilitation activity.

The judge told him: "Let alone a Bowie knife I have never known much baseball to be played in the Stoke-on-Trent area.

"But back in June 2018, upon being told your partner was in difficulty, your response was not to ring the police or go to see what was happening but instead you picked up a baseball bat and Bowie knife - a fierce weapon.

"The knife was used and cut the man. The bat was taken off you and utilised to hit you about the head and that resulted in quite serious circumstances."
