50th Anniversary Celebration of the Historic American Engineering Record Collection

This post is by Kellie Taylor, Ed.D., the 2018-2019 Library of Congress Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow.

What do these images have in common?

All images are all part of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collections held in the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress. The HAER collection was established in 1969 by the National Park Service, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Library of Congress. The collection documents historic sites and structures related to engineering and industry focusing less on the building fabric and more on the machinery and processes within.

Join us July 20th in celebrating the 50 anniversary of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collection. Together with the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library and the National Park Service Heritage Documentation Programs, we will hold a public event in the Library’s Thomas Jefferson building to celebrate the anniversary.

Families can view highlights from the HAER collection and create their own engineering designs in the Young Readers Center from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Speakers from National Park Service Heritage Documentation Programs will be sharing about their work and the collection at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in LJ-119. Since the event takes place on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the 11:00 am session will cover the work done documenting the rocket engine test stands that helped make the Apollo missions successful. Then at 1:00 pm, they will demonstrate the laser scanning technology process they use for creating engineering records now as compared to 50 years ago. Join us for learning and designing! No registration is necessary.
